Driving home after photographing showy lady’s slippers in Eshqua Bog the other day I was listening to our local NPR affiliate wrap up yet another successful fund drive. In my briefcase was an application I was intending to submit to my bank for a small business loan to make some improvements that would enhance the experience of our workshop and tour participants including, among other things, the installation of a greenhouse for macro work regardless of the weather, some computers in the classroom for those who don’t bring along a laptop, a new digital slide projector, printers, etc. The volunteers on the radio kept referring to their community of listeners. Every morning when I walk into my studio and boot up my computer, along with my first cup of coffee, I look forward to opening my in-box and reading the emails from folks who’ve participated in one or more of our tours or workshops who stay in touch and keep me updated on their latest photographic adventures, visitors to Yellowstone National Park who have read my guide to photographing Yellowstone and send me delightful emails about how the guide facilitated their photography in the park, gallery patrons, aspiring nature photographers, and all the kindred spirits who desire to express their affiliation with the natural world through photography. If that’s not a community, than I don’t know my aperture from a squid’s pupil.
Besides helping to raise some funds, what this membership approach will do for us, that a bank loan certainly would not, is foster even more interaction and involvement between Rob, myself, and our community of friends! For more information, contact Gustav.
